In the Spotlight!!

This section of the website is dedicated to the achievements of our “athlete fraternity” of the eighties. We are all making great strides, and we need to make sure that the ones who have accomplished great things are recognized. This recognition is important as we all struggled together, jump the wall to Miss Pearl together, laughed together, won together and lost together. Therefore, as one moves on up the ladder, we should all be happy for them together.

This month we focus on the accomplishments of Mr. Whycliffe “Dave” Cameron. Affectionately know as “Ocro Slime” to some of us, Whycliffe has really done all of us proud. His energy and commitment to service has afforded him the opportunity to grow and develop into a solid citizen, and he leads an exemplary life that definitely will be passed on to his children.

This man of cricket has not left his roots of cricket behind, however, he has moved into the upper echelons of the game on an international level. At thirty four years of age, his accomplishments leaves one in awe of how he finds the time to do all that he does, and still maintain a balanced family life.

He has represented the College at every level of cricket and most importantly he was Vice Captain of the 1989 Sunlight Cup team that played that memorable final at Kensington Oval against Campion College. As a matter of fact he was Vice Captain on a team that has produced some of Jamaica’s finest cricketers at the national level. That team included such players as: Robert Samuels, Mario Ventura, Valentino Ventura, Roger Neil, Matthew Fender and Darren Neita.

He has accomplished an unprecedented amount of success in the Jamaican cricket establishment. Below is a listing of the accomplishments he had garnered since leaving the College:

West Indies Cricket Board – Director 2002-present
West Indies Cricket Board- Chairman – Marketing and Constitution
Review Committees 2003-present
Jamaica Cricket Association – Hon. Treasurer 2002-present
Kensington Cricket Club – President

Whycliffe has done something that many of thought was totally out of character for him, however, everyone who knew him and his determination knew that he would be successful at it. While still being heavily engaged in his cricketing assignments, he somehow found the time to become an expert marksman with both the rifle and the handgun. He became so proficient at it that he was selected to represent the island of Jamaica in the World Championships staged in South Africa in 2002. He has also been a member of the Jamaica Rifle Association since 1999.

His latest endeavor is the frustrating game of golf. He now swears by it, and has the golf apparel to prove it. He has to be the most well dressed “rookie” the game of golf has ever seen. He will play over and over for the gallery the one shot that went straight and far, however, he will never tell you that it was the only one that hit the fairway. With the natural hand to eye coordination that he possess, it is not out of the range of possibility that he will be on our television at a golf major. That is how driven this brother can be.

Sports and community activities were not the only hallmarks of Whycliffe’s personality that needs pointing out, as he was no slouch with his academic achievements as well. Upon leaving the College, he pursued his degree in Hotel Management in the Bahamas, where he graduated with first class honors. He then moved on to get his Masters in omputer Based Management Information Systems. According to Whycliffe, “bird caan fly pan one wing.” Preparation is a constant theme that runs throughout this gentleman’s life and career.

He is also a family man. He is happily married to his wife Connie and they have four children: Maia, Ronaldo, Victoria, and Ralston.
