IIn the Spotlight!! - Dave "Bull Puss" Robinson
Throughout the years the gates of Kingston College, both the Melbourne and North Street campuses have seen many characters walk through. One of the most heralded of the era of the eighties is none other than Dave "Bull Puss" Robinson (super sprinter, super footballer, and straight up Drama King). Miss Helen Douglas anointed him "May Fair Organizer" although it was for only one dance floor in the cafeteria. George Thompson crowned him the "ultra sound tester" even if the equipment was not plugged in. Bull Puss will argue with the best of them to point out that he was the first person to wear a pair of Travel Fox to school. However, our good friend and colleague Leighton Henry has challenged that assertion on many occasions.
Dave passed the Common Entrance examinations from Windward Road All Age in East Kingston and landed at the College in 1980. He made the Colts football team in 1982 and from then on the drama we have all come to know followed quickly thereafter. In a slaughtering of Charlie Smith that year David “Rambo” McCrea crossed one from the flank and Bull Puss scores from 18 yards with a super strike, (or as one of the witnesses to the goal so eloquently put it 'di ball lik pan im shin guard and go in) The College won that game by 6-0.
In 1983 there came another milestone, albeit in the sport of track and field. Bull Puss made history at Boys Championship where the College lost to Calabar by three points. He dropped the baton in a 200m leg of the sprint medley relay. The dropped baton ended any chance of the College catching Calabar. CNN and BBC reported that on the following Monday morning Bull Puss had to be escorted by the Central Kingston police as angry Alpha Academy and Holy Trinity girls accompanied by KC past and present boys gathered to "beat the boasy bwoy". The entire Kingston College fraternity forgave him in 1985 as he score the 3rd goal against Dunoon Technical in a must win (by three clear goals) game for KC to advance to the finals.
Bull Puss’ resume includes two (2) Manning Cup titles, two (2) Boys Championship appearances, one (1) Penn Relays gold (4x100 meters), and he also added the lower award of being the first man to play Roper Cup while still being in 6th form.
He was awarded a scholarship to attend the College of Boca Raton in 1988 and subsequently transferred to Miami Dade Community College where he earned an Associate Degree in Business. He currently resides in Georgia after recently relocating from Miramar, Florida. While living in Miramar he took up the mantle of coach and was successful at both the under 13 and under 14 boys soccer teams. His oldest son Kadeem is a standout player in his age group.
All fun and jokes to the side, one thing no one can ever accuse Dave of, and that is he bleeds purple and white. His endeavors to represent the school was not based on his innate abilities, however, he dreadfully hated to see his school lose at anything (even table tennis). A college man true to the bone, he is one of the few loyalists who really is heart broken over the current situation that plagues the Manning Cup team today, and even more closer to his heart, the current state of health of our beloved coach George Thompson.
He currently is the Manager of major auto parts chain in Georgia, and is married to an Alpha girl (some say she is the one who chased him the furthest after the drop baton) Camille Royes (as he puts it, a great feat for an old gallist). Their union has brought three lovely children into the world Kadeem (14), Deandre (9) and Natahlia (7).
The most notable thing to have happened in the life of Bull Puss is that he is now a recording artist. To many, this was a total shock. However, for those of us who remember at Colts practice him trying to sing Menudo’s If Your Not Here, we knew that he would try his hand at this venture. He is known as Supa Dave to the entertainment industry, and has opened several major shows in the South Florida area. To date he has released two (2) cds and they are featured on cdbaby.com. Based on the reviews by some of his closest colleagues, “di bwoy sound good.” Since the music bug bit in 1993 he has done the singing thing, now he is fooling around with the guitar.
